Masterfs Degree Course (Special Selection for International Students)

TUMSAT offers the following five master course programs for international students and several persons can obtain admission to each course this year. Graduates are awarded the Master of Science (M.MSc.) degree or the Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) degree from TUMSAT.

2. Admission Requirements

(1)

Admission Eligibility

International students who want to be enrolled in master course program of Graduate School of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology and those who comply with one of the following requirements (Note 1).

Requirements

1)

Persons who have completed 16 years of school education at educational institutions overseas or the equivalent by the end of March 2009 for starting in April 2009 or the end of September 2008 for starting in October 2008.

2)

Persons who have completed 16 years of school education by correspondence in Japan as equivalent to the education overseas or the equivalent by the end of March 2009 for starting in April 2009 or the end of September 2008 for starting in October 2008.

3)

Persons who have completed 15 years of school education overseas or the equivalent by the end of March 2009 for starting in April 2009 or the end of September 2008 for starting in October 2008, and those who have been qualified as already obtaining masterfs degree from the graduate school of the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (Note 2).

4)

Persons who have been qualified as already holding bachelor degrees from universities overseas evaluated by the TUMSAT admission eligibility examination and will reach the required age of 22 by the end of March 2009 for starting in April 2009 or the end of September 2008 for starting in October 2008. (Note 2).

(Note 1): Persons who have graduated or will graduate from universities in Japan can only apply for a General Selection or a Special Selection for Society Members.

(Note 2): Applicants corresponding to application requirement item(s) 3) or/and 4) should submit the necessary application documents to Admission SectionUof Admission Office by Friday, June 27, 2008 since there might be an advance examination by judging their submitted documents (Documents posted by mail should arrive no later than the deadline). The acceptance notice will be transferred to the person oneself by Wednesday, July 23, 2008.
If necessary, the second achievement test might be conducted by written and oral examinations at the University. The details will be given to the person.

4. Application Documents

Official academic transcripts of all undergraduate courses issued from the university in which the applicant last enrolled.

Official certificate confirming a Bachelor's degree by the President of the university in which the applicant last enrolled.Applicants complying with requirement (2) should submit Certificate of bachelor's degree or Certificate of acceptance of application of bachelor's degree.

Certificate Authorized by Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) and/or Certificate of TOEFL

Applicants are exempted from a written examination of foreign language in the case one of the following certificates are to be submitted; a certificate with a passing score mark of 240 of Japanese Examination for Japanese University Admission authorized by Japan Student Services Organization and/or a certificate with a passing score mark of 500 of TOEFL(PBT) or 173 of TOEFL(CBT) or 61 of TOEFL(iBT).
A certificate obtained up to 2 years before the application is valid.

Statement of Purpose (Motivation for Graduate Study and Reserch proposal at TUMSAT)

Use the Universityfs required form as stated on another sheet.

Examination Fee (for applicants who do not receive a Monbukagakusho Scholarship)

Pay the examination fee (30,000 Yen) through a bank transfer.
Use designated form and fill out the necessary items (do not separate). Then take it to the window of banking facilities which is dealing with telegraphic transfer. (Post office is not available.)
@After the payment, applicants will receive the parts of Receipt and Certificate of Payment. Please check the reception stamps of the banking facilities and paste the part of Certificate of Payment on the prescribed position of application form. Applicants keep the receipt by themselves.
@The handling charge should be paid by applicants.
Applicants who receive a Monbukagakusho Scholarship should submit the certificate of receipt of a Monbukagakusho Scholarship.

Photographs (2 of the same) for Application Form and Examination Ticket

4x3 cm full-face photograph from the chest up without a hat taken within 3 months. One photograph should be affixed to the space provided on the application, and the other to that on the examination ticket.

Others

Overseas applicants residing in Japan are required to submit a certificate giving proof of alien registration and stating residence status (the name entered on this certificate must be used on submitted forms) issued by the head administrator of the city or other districts.

Note1) A certificate of Japanese language skill authorized by Japanese Language Program for International Students is not applied to an exemption from a written examination of foreign language of the admission examination.
Note2) Transferred screening fee is refundable only at the following cases.

5. Prior Consultation Intended for the Physically Handicapped Applicant

Prior consultation intended for the physically handicapped applicants to master degreefs course is provided. TUMSAT has responsibility to take care of the physically handicapped applicant and/or student who are considered within the level prescribed in the regulation No.22-3 of School Education Law. Please apply to the Admission SectionUof Admission Office by Monday, May 19, 2008.

Prior Consultation Date: On the appointed day by the University up to Friday, May 30, 2008 after the application of the consultation.

Method: Prior consultation is conducted between the University and the applicant or the persons concerned of the school in which the applicant last enrolled who are the representatives of the applicant.

Examination Method

Applicants are evaluated judging Written Examination, Oral Examination, Official Academic Transcript and considering the number limit of the enrolment, and are also required a minimum standard mark of each Written Examination.

(3)

Examination Subjects

 

1)

Written Examination (Table 4)
Written Examination is held with 3 examination subjects; (1) Basic Subject, (2) Specialized Subject, (3) Foreign Language (Note 3).

(Note 3) Applicants are exempted from a written examination of Japanese as a foreign language in the case one of the following certificates is submitted; a certificate with a passing score mark of 240 of Japanese Examination for Japanese University Admission authorized by Japan Student Servises Organization and/or a certificate with a passing score mark of 500 of TOEFL(PBT) or 173 of TOEFL(CBT) or 61 of TOEFL(iBT). A certificate obtained up to 2 years before the application is valid. In the case of the exemption of a Foreign Language examination, the mark is regarded as 80 marks (full marks of Written Examination are 100).

2)

Oral Examination

Oral Examination is given based on the applicant's academic attainments and the applicant's ongoing research of the specialized subject.

Applicants should select one basic subject among the five subjects of the course. *5

M.Eng. in Maritime Technology and Logistics

Applicants should select one basic subject among the five subjects of each specialized subject and mathematics. *6

* 1: In the case the applicant enrolls in devoted laboratory of graduate school, the range of the basic subject is limited to the field of the Aquatic Bioscience, the specialized area of M.MSc. in Marine Life Sciences.

* 2: Basic understanding is required by written explanation within several sentences on each specialized field.

- Food Chemistry: fish protein, fish lipid, extractive components and taste of fish and shellfish, ATP and related compounds and freshness estimation of fish and shellfish, odor compounds and freshness estimation of fish and shellfish, pigments of fish and shellfish.
- Food Technology: Fourierfs law and equation of heat conduction,@Fickfs law and mass transfer, heat conduction and heat convection, Reynolds number, temperature dependency of reaction rate constant, radiation heat transfer,  latent heat and sensible heat
- Food Microbiology: total viable count, effect of low temperature on microbial growth, acid and microbial growth, retort sterilization process and heat-resistant spore-forming bacteria, infectious food poisoning bacteria and toxin producing food poisoning bacteria, differentiation between fungus, yeast, and bacterium, Campyrobacter jejunii, Bacillus cereus, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Staphylococcus aureus .
- Food Physico-Chemistry: monolayer adsorption, gellation, stability of emulsion, free energy and chemical potential, free energy and phase transition, entropy and hydrophobic interaction, hydrophobic bonding and denaturation of protein

* 3: Applicants who major in the area of Environment System Engineering and International Culture and Environment Studies should select one basic subject specified on the outline of
M.MSc. and M.Eng. program of TUMSAT in advance to the application (see pages Prospectus of Supervisor's Field in Master's Degree Course).

* 4: Basic understanding is required about Marine Policy and Management by written explanation.

* 5: Applicants should select one basic subject among the following 5 specializations in advance to the application. Basic understanding is required on the subject.

- 1.

Ocean Environmental Technology: Mathematics (differential and integral calculus), Physics (mechanics), Biophysics(marine biology).

- 2.

Power System Engineering: Carnotfs cycle, Parallel operation of synchronous generators.

- 3.

Marine Mechanical Engineering: Material constants, Friction and Wear, Relation between electric potential and pH, Polarization curve, Cathodic protection, The first and second laws of thermodynamics, Non dimensional numbers on heat transfer,Material Properties ,Mechanical Element, Accelerated motion, Rigid motion with fixed axis.

- 4.

Marine Cybernetics: One mathematical problem among the following fields will be set: Mathematics (linear algebra, differential and integral calculus, the basis of ordinary differential equations ),Physics (the bases of mechanics and electromagnetism, simple plane motion of rigid body, the basis of electric circuit ), The basis of control theory.

- 5.

Marine Exploring and Utilization:
Please ask your supervisor the details about this subject.

* 6: Applicants should select one basic subject in advance to the application. Basic understanding is required by written explanation on the following 5 specialized subjects of 1. Information Systems Engineering, 2. Marine Technology, 3. Logistics System Engineering, 4. Logistics Management and Economics, 5. Marine Safety Technology.
Range of examination questions of mathematics is limited to the subjects: 1.Linear Algebra (matrix, linear equation, Eigen value and Eigen vector) 2. Analysis (differential, integral, partial differential and double integral series) 3. Ordinary Differential Equations (analytical method and series expansion method).

* 6 Any change of optional examination subjects is not accepted after the application.

8. Acceptance Notice

@Around 10:00p.m. Thursday, September 11, 2008, acceptance notice will be announced on the walls at each campus and on the web (http://www.kaiyodai.ac.jp) by mentioning the admitted examinee's application numbers. In addition, persons who could obtain admission to master course will receive a letter announcing the acceptance with necessary documents for admission by mail. Any inquiry on the acceptance by telephone or other means is not permitted.
* Even if you check your application number on the web, please confirm it with the documents for admission.

9. Enrolment Procedure

Persons who have been admitted should take steps to enroll in the master course up to a fixed day and the details of the enrolment procedure will be notified to them by mail with the acceptance notice.

* If any fee of admission and tuition fee is revised, new estimated fee is valid on that occasion and will be applied to every enrolled student.

* TUMSAT provides the students with a remission of admission and tuition fee (whole or half) system or grace of charged fee. The system will be applied to the nominated students taking into consideration the studentsf conditions; who are with superior marks in distress for money as well and who have suffered from disasters.

11. Notes

(1)

Applicants should contact their prospective supervisors or the Admissions Office in advance of application.

(2)

Applicants should submit an application form signed by their supervisor.

(3)

All documents submitted and entrance examination fee can not be returned to the applicant under any circumstances.

(4)

Applications must be completed and will not be accepted in case of arrival after the deadline. Also lack of any of the necessary documents stated above, or applications that are not properly filled out imply a disqualification.
