Alpha-hemolytic streptococcosis, which causes the greatest damage to the domestic aquaculture industry, is a general term for infectious diseases caused by multiple types of bacteria.αThe causative bacteria of hemolytic streptococcosis were investigated for each fish species, and in addition to previously known causative bacteria, new bacteria not previously reported in Japan were identified.Lactococcus petauriThis study was the first to reveal that a bacterium called "Bacteroides difficile" is also prevalent. Furthermore, serological and biochemical analyses of this species were conducted to clarify its bacteriological characteristics. Infection tests were also conducted to confirm its pathogenicity to striped jack and filefish.L. petauriInfectious diseases caused by B. difficile have been reported all over the world in the past few years, causing serious damage to fish, mainly in freshwater aquaculture of rainbow trout and tilapia. These results are the first to reveal that this bacterium is also prevalent in marine aquaculture.αThe award was given in recognition of the significant contribution made to the fight against streptococcosis.
