Swell-Based Bathymetry Mapping Using a Monotemporal SAR Image

[Announcement Summary]
 Coastal water depth information is crucial basic information for identifying signs of coastal erosion, understanding coastal sediment transport, and coastal disaster prevention against tsunamis and storm surges. On the other hand, while conventional ship-based surveying is highly accurate, it requires considerable time and expense to quickly and continuously grasp large areas.
 This presentation describes a method for estimating coastal water depths based on linear wave theory by extracting swell wavelengths from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images taken at a single time point. A key feature of this method is that it estimates water depth using only a single SAR image, without relying on external wave observation data or wave models. Verification of the method along the coasts of Hasaki and Kashima yielded an average relative error of 14.5%, demonstrating its potential for application to wide-area shallow-sea water depth mapping.
 As Earth observation satellites continue to improve in frequency and resolution, this method is expected to be used for continuous topographic monitoring of coastal areas, coastal management, and coastal disaster prevention.
