The sea, which accounts for more than 70% of the surface of the Earth, has not only an excellent environmental regulating function, but also is a treasure house of food resources. Therefore, the Faculty of Marine Science provides comprehensive education and research on the “knowledge, protection, and utilization of the sea.” It aims to deepen the understanding of the ocean through scientific research and promote the sustained utilization of marine bio-resources by protecting and restoring the marine environment in order to secure a stable food supply. Furthermore, it aims to secure and improve the safety of foods supplied by the oceans and develop and evaluate foods having new functions.


 
 
 
Department of Ocean Sciences

The Department of Ocean Sciences provides education and research not only in comprehensive oceanography that measures, analyzes, understands, and predicts phenomena in the oceans, but also in science and technologies related to the protection and restoration of the marine environment and its effective application.

Department of Marine Biosciences

The Department of Marine Biosciences provides education and research in science and technologies for the culture and breeding of marine bio-resources and theories and methods related to appropriate production and management systems to promote the protection and sustained utilization of marine bio-resources, and, consequently, secure a stable food supply.

The Department of Food Science and Technology not only develops technologies to completely utilize food resources, especially marine bio-resources, by using chemical, microbiologic, physical and engineering techniques, but also provides education and research necessary to secure and improve the safety of foods and develop and evaluate foods with new functions.

Department of Marine Policy and Culture

The Department of Marine Policy and Culture provides education and research comprehensively in various ocean-related social and human issues. The goal is to promote both ocean conservation and human affluence through various approaches such as economy, law, international relations, sports, language, literature, and science and culture.

Teacher Training Course for Fisheries High School Education

The main objective of this course is to educate and train teachers for more than 40 fisheries senior high schools established in Japan. Persons admitted into this course must take any one of the four subjects described above.
