Concept

The number of Japanese fishery workers has steadily been decreasing for many years. In recent years, the decrease in working age population in fishing villages and the outflow of working age population to urban areas have accelerated the widening of economic and regional gaps. Just as proof of this, some areas in the coastal regions of Tohoku that were seriously damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake six years ago even have difficulty recovering as well as reconstructing themselves. Considering this present situation, the Fishery Sub-Committee of the Food Science Committee will introduce more realistic measures that are currently being promoted following the symposium "Sustainable Fisheries Industry in a Mature Society and Mid- and Long-Term Strategy for It," which was held last year. In particular, to develop the fisheries industry, we will make an in-depth examination of measures for revitalizing coastal regions and seek to consider ideal visions. More specifically, we will understand the measures for revitalizing local regions with a focus on cities, people and jobs, which are implemented by the Japanese government, especially the Cabinet Office, the role of marine and fishery researchers and the characteristics of fishing villages in Japan, will study the measures implemented in coastal areas regarding the Basic Plan for Fisheries that is now being implemented by the Fisheries Agency and the Basic Plan on Ocean Policy that is implemented by the Headquarters for Ocean Policy and will discuss the direction for the future.
