On August 25, 2017, Dr. Toshio Takeuchi, President of TUMSAT, Dr. Shuich Satoh, Dean of the School of Marine Life Science, the captain and the 21 students on board of TUMSAT's training vessel "Shinyo-Maru" with the Rakusui-kai (One of the alumni societies of TUMSAT) payed a visit to the Kaiyo-Maru memorial monument in Pohang, Korea. Kaiyo-Maru was a training vessel of Fisheries Institute, which is the predecessor of TUMSAT, and it was wrecked off the coast of Pohang on September 9, 1907.
The port call of "Shinyo-Maru" to Korea this year was implemented since it is 110th anniversary from the wreck, and the delegates from TUMSAT visited the monument and paid floral tribute. There was also some address from Dr. Tabata, President of Rakusui-kai to the students about the History of Kaiyo-Maru. After the visit, the delegates interacted with the staffs of Pohang city government and the local residents over lunch.
It became a good opportunity for the students on board of "Shinyo-Maru" to learn the historical facts by visiting the actual place of the monument.
