From 19 to 22 March 2018, Dr. Takeshi Terahara, Assistant Professor, Department of Marine Biosciences visited Myanmar by the support of TUMSAT's program for promoting international joint research. During his stay, he visited University of Yangon to have meetings about aquaculture and ecological survey of Nga Myin and to collect samples. Here is the report from Dr. Kobayashi, Associate Professor, Department of Marine Biosciences, coordinator of this project, and Dr. Terahara, who visited Myanmar this time.

The research group of TUMSAT* has been conducting the ecological survey of Silond catfish Nga Myin, inhabiting the Ayeyarwady River from the end of FY2016 upon request of JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency). The ecological survey aims to protect Nga Myin and establish aquaculture technology of Nga Myin. The purpose of this exchange project is to promote research collaboration between our research group and related research institutions in Myanmar, including TUMSAT's partner institutions, and to reflect such collaborative relationships into research results of ecological survey and aquaculture of Nga Myin. During Dr. Terahara's stay in Myanmar, he had several meetings, collected samples and transported the samples as noted below. Consultation was made well in advance with Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, and University of Yangon about taking out of the samples. In order to complete customs procedures smoothly, staff of the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation accompanied him to Yangon Airport on his return to Tokyo.
