To Study Abroad

As a member of the international society

For you, who study at Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology to understand the sea and leverage benefit from the sea, the school days are the preparation phase to foray on the global area. To acquire the ability as a member of the international society, if you think of studying abroad while still in the university, the world is not far at all. To live and study in a foreign country in school days, and to understand other cultures and make friends there - all of these would be invaluable experience for you.

The exchange programs with the partner institutions out of Japan

Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology has concluded the student exchange agreements with the universities all over the world. We have implemented various academic exchange programs with our partners, including holding the seminars and doing the joint researches. And you can join a student exchange program with a partner to stay abroad for up to a year.

[The process to study abroad]

  1. Get information on the partner university and the teacher in charge from the clerk for overseas students, the clerk for student service, or our web site.

  2. Search the information on the partner on our web site, etc. and determine the partner where you want to study.
    [Note]
    The objective of the exchange program is not to learn the foreign languages, but to study the special subjects. Therefore, especially the students who want to study in English-speaking countries must clear certain English level.( The screening standard of language proficiency(115.6 KB) ) (Japanese Only)(The score of TOEIC or TOEFL is mandatory, so make sure to prepare in advance.
  3. Consult the teacher in charge for the university where you want to study.
  4. From early September, the application will start.

  5. Receive the application form from the clerk for overseas students or the clerk for student service.

  6. Submit the documents to the teacher in charge.
  7. The teacher in charge will determine the priority for the recommendation (submitted to the clerk for overseas students) and the committee of the overseas students, etc. will discuss and decide who should be delegated.

About the seminars to study abroad

We hold seminars to study in the partner institutions.

In these seminars, you can know the process to start studying in the partner universities and listen to the stories from the ex-overseas students. We strongly recommend you join the seminars because it would be good opportunities for you to exchange ideas with the ex-overseas student and collect information. (The seminar to be held next time would be notified on the bulletin boards and the web site.

Q&A

Q1. Do I need to pay the tuition fee to the partner university?

You have to pay the tuition fee to us, but not to the partner.

Q2. How much do I need as the living cost?

It depends on where the partner is. (Generally speaking, the living cost in Europe is high.) Also, it depends on the boarding fee of the dormitory of the partner (About 10,000 yen +)

The living cost may be total of the boarding fee, food expense and so on.

Q3. Do you have any scholarship?

There is the Overseas Studies Support Program (Scholarship for Short Term Visit, 60,000 to 100,000 yen per month). We recommend the applicants met with the requirements to the sponsor and the independent administrative corporation, Japan Student Services Organization. Also, there is our own scholarship based on the student exchange agreements, called "Project to promote student exchange" (30,000 yen per month),* although it is still pending for 2016.

Further, Japan Student Services Organization provides scholarship loans for short-term visit or taking degrees in graduate schools. For the detail, contact the clerk for scholarship.

Q5. Can I enter the dormitory of the partner university?

Usually you can, but double check with the teacher in charge because the situation (renovation or fully occupation) is changeable.

[Advice]

Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology have many overseas students. You have the chance to study about the culture and language of the foreign country in advance by communicating with the overseas students. To build a sense of international awareness, just have a chance to communicate with the foreign overseas students in the university.

Also, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology holds social gatherings for the overseas students twice a year (around May and December). The information is released on the bulletin boards for the overseas students. Any Japanese students who want to join should contact the clerk for overseas students.
