University Philosophy

To carry out basic and applied education and research activities related to studies and to science and technologies concerning oceans, with a view to contributing to sustainable development of human society.

University Goals for Cultivation of Human Resources

In order for our country to develop as a maritime nation and play a role as an international contributor, it is necessary for Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, the only maritime university in Japan, to serve as a core educational and research base for "learning about the sea, preserving it, and utilizing it" and to accomplish its missions. Based on this platform, our university conducts comprehensive education and research concerning oceans, centering on training for highly skilled business professionals, including researchers, in order to nurture human resources with the following abilities and qualities:

  1. Capability to deepen scientific recognition of the oceans, to present measures for desirable utilization of the natural environment, and to put such utilization into practice
  2. Capability to act with the ability to think logically, the ability to judge appropriately, and a sense of responsibility to the society
  3. Capability to recognize and understand various issues in modern society from a broader perspective and to exercise practical leadership to respond such issues
  4. Capability to address and solve problems based on a well-rounded character, a broad understanding of cultures, and deep specialized knowledge and professional expertise
  5. Wide-ranging vision and skills, together with cultural literacy, as a basis for international exchange
