Qualification for admission to the university and screening of individual eligibility for admission

Qualifications for admission to the university

Applicants who satisfy one of the following criteria are considered eligible to apply for admission to the university (including junior colleges and excluding graduate schools).

In addition to these, there are application requirements set for each entrance examination. Therefore, please check the student admission guidelines for the desired entrance examination and check whether you satisfy the application requirements.

  1. Applicants who have graduated from high school or junior high school. (Article 90, Paragraph 1 of the School Education Act)
  2. Applicants who have completed a three-year curriculum of high school education in a special school or in a regular high school. (Article 90, Paragraph 1 of the School Education Act)
  3. Applicants who have completed a 12-year curriculum of school education overseas. (In case the educational curriculum is less than 12 years, the applicant must have completed the specified preparatory educational curriculum (List of preparatory educational curriculum accredited by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) or the specified curriculum in a training institution (List of designated training institutions accredited by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology). (Ordinance for Enforcement of the Act of School Education, Article 150, No. 1, and Notifications No. 153 and No. 2 of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, 1981)
  4. Applicants who have successfully passed the scholastic aptitude test after completing what is equivalent to a 12-year educational curriculum overseas. (In case the educational curriculum is less than 12 years, the applicant must have completed the specified preparatory educational curriculum (List of preparatory educational curriculum accredited by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) or the specified curriculum in a training institution (List of designated training institutions accredited by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology). (Notifications No. 153, No. 1 and No. 2 of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, 1981)
  5. Applicants who have completed the educational curriculum of an international school in Japan, considered to be equivalent to a high school abroad (List of international schools in Japan considered to be equivalent to high school). In case the educational curriculum is less than 12 years, the applicant must have completed the specified preparatory educational curriculum (List of preparatory educational curriculum accredited by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) or the specified curriculum in a training institution (List of designated training institutions accredited by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology).   6. Applicants who have completed the educational curriculum of a Japanese school abroad, recognized as equivalent to a high school (List of Japanese schools accredited by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, specifically the schools providing high school education). (Ordinance for Enforcement of the Act of School Education, Article 150, No. 2)
  7. Applicants who have completed the high school curriculum of a designated vocational school (List of vocational high school curriculum accredited by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology). (Ordinance for Enforcement of the Act of School Education, Article 150, No. 3)
  8. The applicants who have completed the curriculum of an old-system school. (Notifications No. 47, No. 1 - No. 19, No. 2 of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, 1948)
  9. Applicants who hold a qualification for enrolling in universities overseas, such as International Baccalaureate, Abitur or Baccalaureate. (Notifications No. 47, No. 20 - 22 of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, 1948)
  10. Applicants who have completed the 12-year educational curriculum of an international school certified by an international accreditation body (WASC, CIS or ACSI). (List of international schools certified by an international accreditation body) (Notifications No. 47, No. 23 of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, 1948)
    *Applicants who have completed the 12-year educational curriculum of an international school accredited by ECIS, the former name for CIS, are also eligible for application.
  11. Applicants who hold the Certificate for Students Achieving the Proficiency Level of Upper Secondary School Graduates (the former University Entrance Qualification Examination). (Ordinance for Enforcement of the Act of School Education, Article 150, No. 5)
  12. Applicants whose individual eligibility for application has been recognized through the screening process conducted by the university. (Ordinance for Enforcement of the Act of School Education, Article 150, No. 7)

The screening of individual eligibility for application

About the screening of individual eligibility for application pertaining to entrance examinations at the faculties of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology for the year 2016.

For general entrance examination at our university, a screening of the individual eligibility for application (hereinafter, referred as "individual screening") is conducted for the applicants who do not fall under any of the qualifications from (1) to (11), by means of which the successful applicants are given eligibility for application. The applicants who wish to apply for the individual screening are asked to complete the application procedure given below.

The screening of the individual eligibility for application is a process by which it is decided whether an applicant qualifies for the entrance examination or not, and it is different from the selection of applicants to be admitted to the university, therefore, after the successful screening, the applicants must also take the entrance examination.

1. Application requirements for the individual screening

Applicants who satisfy all of the following requirements are eligible to apply for the individual screening.

  1. Applicants who show willingness to enter our university.
  2. Applicants who wish to take the general entrance examination of our university.
  3. Applicants who will be at least 18 years old by March 31, 2016.

2. Application documents

The applicants who want to apply for the screening of the individual eligibility for application are asked to submit the Application Form for Eligibility for Application Screening(48.6 KB) (Japanese Only) and the documents that fall under any of the following categories.
(In case there are several educational backgrounds and work experience, please submit all of them.)

  1. Applicants with educational background in vocational schools or other schools
    ① The transcript certifying educational background
    ② Certificate of graduation (or certificate of expected graduation)
    ③ Documents by which the following items can be verified at the school in which the applicant is enrolled (or has graduated):
     A) items related to the term of study, year and semester
     B) items related to the curriculum and organization of the subjects
     C) items related to the educational curriculum and the number of school hours
     D) items related to the learning evaluation and the curriculum completion certification
  2. Applicants having an individual educational background, such as credits acquired as a special registered student at a university
    ① Certificate for credits acquired proving the educational records
  3. Applicants having work experience for companies
    Documents certifying the work experience
  4. Applicants holding certain certificates
    Documents proving the certificates acquired

3. Screening system and procedure

A proper inspection of the submitted documents is carried out by the School Entrance Examination Committee of the university.
At the inspection, the requirements that must be satisfied so that the vocational school's high school curriculum can be "designated as pertaining to university application qualification" apply.
However, in cases when the applicant has a personal educational background, such as learning experience in vocational schools or other schools, or has acquired credits as a special registered student at a university, as well as in cases when the applicant has work experience at companies or has acquired certain qualifications, the judgement is done comprehensively based on these facts.

4. Application period

  1. Applicants who wish to apply to our university when applying for the National Center Test for University Admissions
    August 21, 2015 (Fri.) [must be delivered to us until this date]
  2. Applicants who had already gone through the screening of the individual eligibility for application at other universities and subsequently changed their mind, deciding to apply to our university when applying for the National Center Test for University Admissions.
    January 21, 2016 (Thu.) [must be delivered to us by this date]
  3. Applicants who take the supplementary examination of the National Center Test for University Admissions
    Apply no later than January 26, 2016 (Tue.) 17:00.
    (Note) Must present the permit for the supplementary examination of the National Center Test for University Admissions

5. Application procedure

Mail the documents by registered express delivery, mentioning

"Application for the screening of individual eligibility is enclosed"(48.6 KB)(Japanese Only)

in red letters on the front of the envelope.
