我が国は、持続的発展のため、国土を囲む海に潜在する資源とエネルギーを有効に利用しなければなりません。そのためには、新しい産業を創り育てて行く必要があります。一方、資源やエネルギーの利用に際しては環境の保全に細心の注意が必要であることを、私達はこれまでの経験から学びました。海洋資源環境学部は、二つの学科において、海に関する基礎的 / 総合的理解と海の利用・開発・保全に関する教育・研究に取り組んでいます。

　日比谷紀之客員教授が、ドイツ・ベルリンにて開催された第28回ＩＵＧＧ総会において、国際測地学及び地球物理学連合（IUGG）のElected Fellowshipを受賞されました。

　IUGGは8つのアソシエーション(IACS：雪氷圏科学、IAG：測地学、IAGA：地球電磁気学・超高層物理学、IAHS：水文科学、IAMAS：気象学・大気科学、IAPSO：海洋物理科学、IASPEI：地震学及び地球内部物理学、IAVCEI：火山学及び地球内部化学)から構成されている国際学協会です。IUGG Fellowshipは、測地学または地球物理学の分野で卓越した功績を挙げた研究者に対して贈られるものです。日比谷先生は、海洋物理学分野における卓越した功績、特に、内部潮汐による海洋乱流の生成と、海洋・気候モデルにおける混合のパラメタリゼーションの分野における第一人者として、長年にわたり国際的に研究をリードしてきた功績によりIUGG Elected Fellowに選出されました。IUGG Elected Fellowshipとしては日本人初の受賞となります。

Visiting Professor Toshiyuki Hibiya (Emeritus Professor of the University of Tokyo, Visiting Principal Researcher of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology) was awarded the Elected Fellowship of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) at the opening ceremony of the 28th IUGG General Assembly held in Berlin, Germany, on July 13, 2023.

The IUGG consists of eight Associations (IACS: Cryospheric Sciences, IAG: Geodesy, IAGA: Geomagnetism and Aeronomy, IAHS: Hydrological Sciences, IAMAS: Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences, IAPSO: Physical Sciences of the Oceans, IASPEI: Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior, IAVCEI: Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior). The IUGG Elected Fellowship is awarded to researchers "who have made exceptional contributions to international cooperation in geodesy or geophysics and attained eminence in the field of Earth and space sciences." Professor Hibiya was selected for "being a global leader in the production of ocean turbulence by the internal tide and the parameterization of mixing in ocean and climate models." He is the first Japanese national to become an IUGG Elected Fellow.
